Default 1g-gte

the car that i just bought has a 1G-GTE in it, i need to know if its still a good idea getting this car or not,

i've barly seen this motor listed in any of the forms on here,
is it going to be alot worse to find parts for cause it is a little rarer?>
(2.0L Twin turbo, 89 GT)

please get back to me soon....

If i had the funds, I'd get it just because there aren't as many driving around with the 1G in them. Well, that's coming from someone who lives in the US so of course there aren't any here.

I would have to imagine that it will be harder to find parts (and therefore probably more expensive, too) because it's not as common as the 7M or 1JZ. I'd say keep looking so that you don't have to go through the headache of looking for parts or any information (and forum help) on it.

so it is rarer?
how many people on here have you seen with them...
because i know it'll be hard to find parts for i just want to know how hard...
and i was told when i bought it that it was a 2.5L twin, which is the 1J, but i took it to a shop, turns out to be the 1G-GTE
its still a nice engine but im getting it checked out alot more because i don't want anything to go wrong with it.

and its only got 87,000 KMS on it.. ( not miles)

right hand drive,

its not a bad little car but..
im soo worried about the engine.

Why are you worried exactly?

With 87,000km on the clock you will have no need to replace parts, except the ignitor pack, as they shit themselves every 100,000km or so.

Much more reliable than the 7M, most likely due to the lower hp and torque figures.

Parts aren't that hard to find for them, you can use 1G-GE parts for pretty much everything. Just raid soarers, cressidas, altezzas, chasers and markIIs all of them have either the GE or GTE. Not to mention you can get most parts TGP still.

really are you sure?
then again i haven't seen many of thoes are in general being in alberta,
and its kinda weird, the guy who im buying it off of only put 1000kms on it..
and just burnt the out something in the clutch trying to get it out of the ice...

and it was a brand new clutch,
after he did that what other problems should i look out for?

cause thats quite a bit of torque being put on everything in the drive train, since the car never moved,

and was in there so good it even pulled the toe truck back 2 feet after he tried to rip it out of the ice.

I've put 60,000km on my 1G, i've run it at 12lb and i've dragged her a few times, only had minor problems.

Clutch is the weakest things in the drivetrain, its the cheapest and easiest to replace, replace it with a hilux clutch (older hilux have the same spline count and same diameter 9" for the NA 9 1/2" for the turbo) its slightly more heavy duty.

If you manage to destroy a W58 gearbox with a 1G, you are a champion.

Only problems i've had with my 1G is, ignitor pack, alternator, knock sensors and oil seals on my turbos. Oh and she finally broke a camshaft, but at 200,000km a broken lobe on a camshaft is hardly a big issue.

But its ultimately up to you, but they are nice cars to drive, a bit of seat time and you will be able to get her moving quite well.

yeah i don't have any mechanical experience with these cars so, i really think i should get someone else to toss in the clutch but.. she's charging me 1,600 for a double plate carbon fiber clutch,
or 1,200 for a regular one ....

and really thoes are the only problems you've had?

and yours is a RHD too right?

Yeap, 1986 GA70 gen1 1GGTEu converted to manual, I'm guessing yours would have the Yamaha head also?.

1,200 American dollars?!?!?! i paid 200NZD (350NZD for a 4puk ceramic) for my clutch, there is no way to justify 1g (or 2g in NZD ) on a clutch replacement.

The job is piss basic and i recommend you do it yourself (if you have atleast an ounce of lego experiance ), half a dozen bolts on the bellhousing, 2 on the starter, take off the drive shaft hanger bearing pull out Dshaft, Pull out the center console (4 screws i think?) undo the gearstick, unbolt your slave cylinder, put jack under box take off the rear X member, hold the box steady wriggle it backwards as someone lowers the box down on the jack. (may need to move your exhaust slightly, my custom one gets in the way, not sure about factory).

Undo the half dozen bolts on the P/P take it off, pull out clutch, replace clutch , replace release bearing, replace p/p, and repeat the steaps i said above in reverse Easy as pie, takes me about 1hr to 1.5hrs. Theres a few triks involved in lining up the clutch splines and the gbox input spline, but it mostly takes patience.

While your there i'd replace the crank seal and the seal in the main input seal on the gbox.

For technical information on them, its not hard to find, just visit any Australian or New Zealand supra sites. We have a fair few running around.
