New to this forum, have been watching for a while, finally bought an 86.5 with 100 kms, 5sp non turbo. Car is mint, the big HG was done around 60 km. My 2 questions, temp gauge sits about 8 oclock, a bit below half, would this be considered normal or is indicative of a 180 stat. If a 195 stat was used would it sit half way at 9 oclock? Knowing only that HG was done many years ago at the Toyota dealer, is it recommended at all to re-torque the head bolts or leave them alone? Thanks for all the previous good info

check the cylinder compresion, and spark plugs,if they both check out at the same time ,retorque all head bolts to 72 ft lbs.is this a right hand drive?, because eight o clock on an american introduced supra is completely off the gauge, maybe you meen 4 o clock?as long as it doesn't overheat durring regular driving it's okay.when you race this engine it may get hot because the desighners only desighned the coolant system for efficientcy as long as the engine is driven normally.the factory should have torqued the head down tighter when thedy replaced the head gasket, but it is never bad to double check that every thing is okay, hope this helps peace!

sorry I meant to say it only reads about 1/3 on the gauge, so it seems a bit cool but everything is OK, should it normally read 1/2 way? My car is LHD Canadian. When retorquing, would you loosen the bolts a bit then go to 72? Thanks for the help.

do not loosen bolts if you are going to toque to a higher value than what you started with, tighten steight away,if the bolts are tighter then 72 ft lbs and the head bolt is still intact do not loosen the bolts, they may have been torqued to 75 or 76 ft lbs, this will also work fine.a third of the way up the water temp gauge is okay when driving normally.thats how my old n/a used to run.they get hot when you push them for a while.if this happens and you want better cooling( for racing applications )upgrade to a koyo racing rad, they are the best and plus you can use all the old hardware.it is recommended that you opperate a 180 to 195 thermostat, the coolest youd want to get would be a 170 but i've never seen one for the 7m-ge.you can get 160 thermostats but these will cause your warm up programming to malfunction(unless you've had the ecu modded to accept these perameters)making the vehicle run incorrectly all the time.so there you have it the "skinny",hope this helps and good luck to you and your supra!
