Rebuild transmission or leave it to the pros?

The W58 transmission in my '88 MK III N/A is starting to make weird noises, like it is ready to drop a bearing. I've located a source for parts, and the TSRM includes step-by-step instructions to dismantle and rebuild. However, I have no indication on if this is a tricky job, or how sensitive the re-fitting is. Basically, is this a job a shadetree machanic can do in his home garage, or best left to experts with a shop?

Bump.

Anyone have any insight?

I personally wouldn't touch it, but that's just me. I have zero experience with transmissions other than cussing them though I've encountered competent owner/mechanics who've rebuilt their's without any real problems beyond putting the odd part in backwards and having to pull the tranny out and do it again.

:eek2:
