Default Overdrive off light stays on

Just bought this car and the O/d off light stays on, when you press the button the light does react until you take your hand off. Ive noticed that the shifter is loose does this sound like it could be the switch not being secured or is this the sign of a bigger problem. I was told maybe I should change fluid and filter for the auto tranny but even though I plan to do that anyway I find it hard to believe that it could affect this problem. Anyone else had this problem?
Oh its a 87 7MGE Auto stock everything.

Could be a bad O/D switch on the shifter. You'll want to pull the console panel where the shifter is and replace the shifter bushings (Toyota, cheap part to fix it), makes a world of difference if the shifter is showing side-to-side sloppiness. While you're in there take a look at the O/D wiring and maybe clean up the switch if you can get to it.

This is definately not a tranny problem, though like you said it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the fluid changed. BTW, you don't have a filter, just a pickup screen iirc.

Get used to it. The MkIII tends to be very jealous of your time, attention, and money. Look at it as being the expensive mistress you never thought you could afford.
