Okay guys, I own an 88 Supra turbo, and I recently had some head work done. It was torn down twice, due to a blown head gasket, and a mistake by the mechanic. The first time he released it to me, everything was fine, until it started overheating again. So I took it back.
He put the head gasket on wrong. So he re-did everything. I got it back, and it was fine! I started to notice a loud clicking sound when I accelerated. I looked at the engine and it isn't the fan clutch, nor any other fans(As far as I can tell). I got to looking closer, and I noticed the sound was coming from near the back of the engine, on the side where the turbo sits, close to the head. I checked the oil, and I put some in it(it was a little low) thinking it would fix the problem. It's still freakin clicking! It's driving me nuts, because it's actually more noticeable than the sound of the car...and my car isn't quiet..AT ALL! Does anybody know what could cause this?

I have this same problem, I think. My noise is near the back of the engine, from the head I think. Using a stethoscope it appears to be loudest over my #5 cylinder. However I can hear the noise on any peice of metal to include my turbo. If I take off the oil fill cap and put my ear near the opening I can hear it which makes me think it's in the head as well. I adjusted my valve clearances so that's not the issue. It didn't make this noise before the head gasket job but it does after it. Like your car, the noise is louder than the sound of the engine and exhaust. I refuse to drive it obviously so I am really getting frustrated as I can not figure it out.

I've got the same issue.. as soon as I replaced the head gasket and started it up, it clicks, quieter when cold louder when warm. I've been doing all the checks and have guys who know checking it out.. all say different things, but main bearings gone has been the most suggested. I'm assuming that the previous owner is somewhat lying to me.. he claims the car blew the gasket 100 yards from his house and he parked it right away. I think he drove it till it knocked then parked it. I haven't taken off the oil pan yet but that's my next step. Anyone ever run into these issues before and find resolution? If I figure it out for sure I'll post it.. please do the same if someone else fixes it!! Thanks

My friend is suggesting that the valves are out of line. Me and him are going to take off the valve cover and align them to factory specs, and if that fixes it. Ill post. Thanks for support guys, this is a mystery haha

Problem has been found, exhaust leak near the turbo, and manifold!
