Trunk Latch replacement questions
My 92 supra's trunk latch is for a lack of a better tearm, broke.
the outside keyhole is rusted, bent and tears the heck outa my keys. My inside trunk release lever is also broken. Im looking for more information on the subject of replacing the entire mechanism. any point in the right direction would be apprecaited. Im looking to replace the inside trunk release lever and the actual trunk lock. and perhaps the latching mechanism Last edited by Green7mgte; 12-02-2009 at 07:24 AM. |

I recommend consulting a locksmith before ordering a new lock... the dust cover is replacable and if the lock cylinder is in good shape the wafers can be replaced and you'll save a ton... granted you'll only save a ton if YOU pull the lock out and take it to him.... if he has to pull it or come and get it... well...
The mechanism is obvious enough once you get the interior trim panel off. IIRC, the center panel is all you have to remove. The cable which runs to the front of the cabin to release the trunk from inside may have snapped. If so it can be a bit of a pain to replace and you might want to consider just installing an electronic trunk release solenoid... it's not aly less of a headache, but they're nice if you've got an aftermarket alarm with a trunk release feature and you'll be pullingup the carpet either way. Cables are shown here: http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...spx?F=6709&P=1 |

any detailed instructions on how to change the wire lever inside the car. I was talking to a buddy of mine and he said to just grab hold of the wire cut it and make it taught again.. so the picture I'm getting is to disconnect it were it connects to the lever beside my seat. cut it to remove any slack and re-attach it. is this a viable solution? would it be ezier to do the same operation in the rear of the car were the lever wire connects to the actual trunk latch?
thanks (also grab the wire and don't let it slip down the tube or your never going to get it out again.) http://www.toyota-supra.info/forums/...ase-cable.html found this. basically the same idea. Last edited by Green7mgte; 12-03-2009 at 05:11 AM. |

To the best of my recollection, there is no slack to be had and both ends of the cable have pressed metal fittings or blocks which attach to the lever and actuator, respectively. I've worked on car's which, like bicycles, had only a pressed fitting on one end and a receiving end with a fitting to clamp down on the other... I'm pretty sure ours are not and the illustration in the link I provided appears to confirm it (granted, you can't trust an illustration to be completely accurate). I do know for certain that the trunk end of the cable terminates in a pressed or molded metal block/fitting.
Also, just in case anyone didn't notice and is curious, the trunk's lock cylinder also uses a cable to open the trunk, there's no direct linkage their. |

so what is the best way to repair my trunk latch? Any input on the actual operation of it before I do something rash and remove my seat and pull back some carpet to get a first hand look just to see its not even possible.

Take off the rear trim pieces and inspect the cable connections there... if the two cable ends are intact then you'll need to look at the other end of the release cable and the lever up by the driver's seat. You may inspect either end first, but if you're planning on having the rear lock fixed then I'd start in the one place.
The lock cylinder you will need to take to a locksmith for cleaning up and restoring (if the cylinder isn't too worn). If they can't repair the lock get a quote and let me know how much they say... I may be able to help you find it cheaper. |
