The front of the fender is only connected with two nuts. You just need a VERY long extension and you can reach straight down to get them.
I can move this to the FAQ, but personally, I'd really dig it if someone wanted to compile a clean thread about the removal of all the primary panels with pictures... the pictures needed are all over the place; No need to even remove parts from your own car. I haven't the time for it right now.

Excellent! Just let me know when you create it and I'll make sure no one else posts to the thread until you're done with it.

I'm still in the process of removing my bumper to replace a passenger front quarter panel. I've never had this much trouble with panel removal. I've done countless bumper removals with other cars but I guess it's all part of owning a mk3 =)
It took me a week to finally find these diagrams but they helped alot Early and late bumper!!! and the fender! I agree with CRE, it would be better to post up some pictures. I plan on taking some the next time I go attack it but the weather has been crap latly =/

I'm sorry, I had thought about posting a link to those diagrams, but I didn't think they'd be of much help with regard to removal instructions. Thanks for posting up.
I'm going to be swapping my bumper (again) in a week or two... I'll try to take some good pics too.
