There a lot more to it than just advancing and retarding to shift the output peaks... Cam tuning has little to do with the EMS employed, you'll get more out of it that way, but there's no problem with tuning your cam timing on the stock EMS.

Adjustable cam gears can get you a bit more power out of the stock cams, but they really shine when tuning a set of more aggressive cams.

i found a really good thread called 'cam tuning' i think , at 'celicasupra.com' . It was in the section for M series engines, IT might be in FAQ if it's not there, do a search, it was quite indepth. It should tell you all you want to know.
