l.e.d. mkIII tail light?
I am looking for any information about where I can find L.E.D tail lights for my 89 mkIII. I have seen them on youtube but I can not find them for sale. Please help me.

They're all completely custom.

thanks I think.
I figured they were custom. I also figured anyone capable of making them would would probably be interested in making a profit as well.

Not so far... I've been keeping my eyes open too. You could try asking. There's a thread by Tekdeus (sp?) over at supramania where he shows his (his are shown on YouTube) and one or two others posted theirs... none where interested in making more at the time... might have changed though, I haven't checked recently. I'd start with trying Tek. If you do find someone who's willing to make more let us know... I've been meaning to design and etch some PCBs, but haven't had the time and I've got more pressing things to deal with.

Tekdeus' thread:
http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50058 He says that given the $300-$400 it cost to make his setup and the fact that it was around 50 hours of labor: "I won't be making any more, sorry!" 89TurboPC's thread: http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54209 He specifically states that he will not make another set for anyone. Clearcorners.com used to rework MKIII taillights, markers and turn signals, but they've since stopped... You had to send them a set to modify; the few people who did use their service sent in all new lenses which isn't cheap and then you add on the couple thousand dollars (literally) for the services...it get's painful fast. The only remotely cost effective way to make a set that I can think of would be to buy premade LED rectanglar lamps like they use on rigs and retrofit the boards into our taillamp housings. I'll dig through the other links I've saved, but unless it's worth over six or seven hundred dollars... you can probably safely forget it. |
Their was a similar thread on this on SM not too long ago, people said brad aka tedikus has spent 1000+ dollars on the led setup.

thanks
Thanks a lot for the intel'. I'm not too suprised at that. I was planning on being in the neighborhood of $500. I suppose the next question is if there is anyone who can make clear lenses that I could fit to the factory light shroud. I am willing to send out the original lenses for molding.
