turbo rebuild, help
so my turbo is blown (makes bad noise, and quite a bit of shaft play) and i was just wondering what was the best rebuild kit for the ct26. any suggestions? i dont really need anything new except for bearings, thrust collar, thrust bearing, thrust spacer, o rings, seal plate, shaft nuts and piston rings (compressor and exhaust side) right?
thank you in advance oh and what are the best types of metals that these parts are made of? |
Unless you've got the right equipment and experience to balance the rotating assembly this isn't something you can do yourself. That shaft and the attached wheels has to be very precisely balanced or it's going to destroy itself and potentially take the engine with it when it does. You're far better off sending it to someplace like Drift Motion.

how much would that be?? approximatelty?
thanks for the info |
How much it's going to cost will depend on just how bad things really are inside... it's not something you can just guess at by feeling the assembled unit. If it is rebuildable it shouldn't cost more than $200... varies a bit by area though.

if i have to buy a new turbo because i cant rebuild this one, would you suggest getting a new stock ct26 or upgrading it to something different?
i ask because i have heard that the ct26 is an amazing turbo and has a very similar boost mapto that of what some larger turbos have. |
If you're going to go with an upgraded CT26, I'd suggest a 57 trim. It's about the best compromise of power vs. reliability.
|
is it more or less reliable than the ct26
|
Probably a little less than the stock CT26, but still a pretty safe bet if it's done by a competent shop.
|
The 54 and 57 trim both get excellent reviews... quick spooling and a lot more airflow. The increase in rotational mass in the 57 versus the 54 is said to be negligible and as such the 57 trim upgrade is what most shops and owners recommend.

allot of people in the supra community look to driftmotion.com for there rebuild or upgrade. I would tend to check locally first.
