picking up a 88 supra. I need advice!
I am going to look at an 88 supra non turbo 3.0 liter targa top. It has 168,000 miles on it. If it hasnt been abused will i get over 250,000 miles out of it? Thats my main concern!

Depends on how well it was maintained by previous owners, and of course how well you take care of it. How it was driven will make a difference too, along with the chance for some of the less-well-considered mods we often find on Supra's.
Check the oil, check the coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, ps fluid, etc. What those fluids look like will give you some idea of what the cars condition really is and how it's been taken care of. Compression test wouldn't hurt either. The 3.0 can definately do 250k under the right conditions, but until you really take a look at it you won't know what you're getting. |
It's possible to get that much life and more out of a 7M, but don't count on it happening without some significant work. I have a friend who is the third owner of a '90 MKIII. The original owner was a woman (not an old lady, from what he says) who had the vehicle serviced religiously for most of the 15 years or so that she had it INCLUDING 2 complete rebuilds... The head gasket was replaced once again by the second owner. Needless to say the engine runs very well at ~300,000 miles, but it took diligence on the part of everyone who has owned the car to keep it in the immaculate shape it is still in.
I would add to Mirage's suggestions getting a leak down test done. I'm going to move this thread to the MKIII forum. |

ive got almost the same supra with the same mileage as you do and i hope mine lasts atleast 250k miles |
