Tips on things to replace after engine removal
 

Hi Im kind of new to the mk3 supra. Just bought one a couple weeks ago and finally pulled the engine. :)

What are some common problems or things that I should replace?

The car is a 1989 turbo model. Mostly stock but it has had six owners so I have seen some weird things while taking it apart.

I know about the head gasket problem and I know for a fact it has a blown head gasket. Other than that though I know of no other problems but we shall see what we find when the engine is dismantled.

Also is there any crap I can completely eliminate? Such as the charcoal canister (i think thats what its called) ?? And if not can someone tell me why it wasn't connected to anything? Any other pointless crap toyota decided to clutter up the engine bay with??

also do these cars have EGR? I think I remember reading that pre-1990 supras didn't have EGR. Can anyone confirm that?

Yes, pre-90's engines have EGR valves (unless it's a JDM engine), and both it and the charcoal cannister serve legitimate purposes.

If a PO didn't have the cannister hooked up it's likely because they didn't know how, didn't what it was and/or what it was for. The cannister handles evaporative fuel vapors as well as helps maintain a slight (2 lbs iirc) positive pressure in the fuel tank. This helps the fuel pump out. The EGR is part of the emissions control system, and helps prevent engine knock/detonation which could otherwise wreck your pistons and other hardware.

If you want to clean the bay up some you could re-route the wiring loom, hide it in various ways. Use the later model Toyota/Lexus coils which would eliminate the stock coilpack on top of the engine.

As long as the engine is out make sure to replace the heater union and hose on the back of the engine. They aren't expensive, but they are a complete and utter PITA to replace with the engine in. All the radiator/water lines, vacuum lines, etc.

thanks mirage. after some research last night I came to the same conclusion. both serve a purpose. I need to figure out how the canister is supposed to be hooked up.

one a different note. if I plan on making some upgrades to the engine are there any aftermarket ECU's that plug directly into the existing wiring harness?

As for standalones and such, one of the members on here who are into such things will need to help you out with that. I have zero experience with them.

I 've heard mixed views on the the erg removal. I put mine back on when I did my hg but many people I have talked to with mk3s run without them by just running higher octane gas. I've heard one problem is that the egr can crack and leak so that may also be a reason to remove it. And with the evap canister, you can always go with a smaller one from another car to open up some space in the engine bay.

this is how the back of the engine looked when I pulled it. I'm thinking someone before me deleted the EGR, albeit very poorly. Can anyone confirm that these are indeed the EGR holes or is this something else? One way or another something is missing.

Yeah someone already took the egr out. The two ports that have to be blocked off are on the intake where it is blocked off and right by the #6 exhaust port. The other ones don't really matter.

so what all do I need to buy to put it back on?

You need all of the egr and the egr cooler plate for the back of the cyl head. I would just leave it go for now and run premium in it for now.
