Don't know.... don't forget to calculate how much resistance the additional load adds to the system too though.

Physics.

Alternators aren't magic... that extra power has to come from somewhere. To put it most simply: The greater the demand on a generator the greater it's demand on the engine driving it.

This always kills me... other than what the garbage "we dynoed it with and without (two weeks apart)" writeups always say, just how many HP do you think it takes to move a fan while the air is already moving toward it? A few, tops.

If you've gained anything it's not much. It's unlikely that you've lost any, but I doubt you've freed much up and it's no more than you could have freed up with simpler and less expensive solutions like a new (see more efficient) water pump and an aluminum flex fan.

There's balance to everything, you can only ever go so far with something before you start incurring losses.

Well all I can say is since pulley driven fans aren't really used today in cars there must be a reason for electic fans wether it is cost, more room, or power I don't know. I think alot or people go for the electic since the fan shroud breaks and is hard to replace since they are so hard to find.

Default Fans

Would not the manufacturer make far more money with replacement electric fans rather than the conventional fans that usually last the life of the car?

Hmmm, you could charge for sensors, and switches and electronic troubleshooting. It is no secret that car manufacturers are trying to put the local garage out of business.

Garages can't even read their codes on new vehicles any more and the dealers aren't releasing their diagnostics to 3rd parties. It won't be too many more years that if you have a new car only your dealer will be able to work on it.

What always worries me for MKIII owners is that the most popular fan to use is the dual setup from a Ford Contour / Mercury Mistique... Those things die ALL THE TIME! My wife had a Mercury Mistake for two years... we replaced the fans THREE TIMES (Mercury paid for the third, but we got screwed on the first two). Yes, there was a recall on them some time back and most mechanics will tell you they're crap...

Some of the perks to electric fans is that they're not always on, take less room and best of all can be wired to keep cooling while the car is off... same for the the electrical cooling pump on that last one. (hint)

The down sides are: generally weight more than modern mechanical replacements, when they fail... well, they're completely dead, high current demands on the alternator when they are active (they're getting better though).

Default Fan Shrouds

Saw a fan shroud sell off ebay a few days ago for $40.00. I needed it for my Black car but figured I have time to find one. It was missing the lower attachment and I still had problems looming on my Red 5 speed, thats why I passed on it. Today I would buy it cause my red car is all better now. Of course it was for an NA but the turbo shrouds must be out there as well. If they were so rare I figure there would have been a bidding war but only one bid for it.
