High speeds for 15min or longer, temp gets high

So I have a quick question, I hope.

When I do over 85mph for over 15 minutes, temp gauge starts to climb but doesn't reach red line, about two ticks away. If I just drive it under 85 mph, temp gauge stays at normal operating mark (about 1/3 on the OEM temp gauge). Coolant has been flushed and replaced, oil changed, filter changed. I'm not see any coolant leaks or losing any, as far as I can tell. I do have the flexlite electric fans instead of the OEM fan. So, I'm looking for any tips on where I should look or go to figure this out. Could it be the electric fans can't keep up with the higher speed to keep engine cool or is it somewhere else in the engine I need to check? Any help would be great here.

Forgot to add what I'm driving:

87 Turbo, 5 speed, not really any mods on it yet, just want it running right first. It does have an open intake and after market BOV and open/screen fiber hood.

Are you running your A/C while you're driving it and it is heating up?

I'm not running the AC, that is another problem I have to fix but that's for another day..lol

In my 87 N/A manual it shows that the regular operating temp is anywhere for 1/4 to almost red lines on stock temp gauge. so from the sounds of it doesn't look as though its over heating~

Overheating

Well that can't be right cause my temp guage never reached the red and my radiator was boiling so I don't think that estimate could possibly be correct as far near the red being normal.

wstanek 06-29-2010 11:46 PM

well a couple b4 the red line in the ORIGINAL manual for 87 supra N/A Standard says almost b4 red is not over heating

batmmannn 06-29-2010 11:53 PM

b4 Red

Well then they must be cooking eggs, cause at that temp my car was boiling so bad it was leaving and overflowing the overflow bottle.

but it will tell you that is NOT normal operational temp, if it goes over half way you have a problem somewhere...

did you replace your thermostat
does your turbo have the stock heat insulator? or heat shield of some sort?
make sure your getting enough antifreeze and you could try adding a coolant additive.

CHECK ERROR CODES!!!!!!! ALWAYS CHECK ERROR CODES!!!!!!!
learn how to check here:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...aspx?S=FI&P=23
(jumping of terminal te1 & e1 can be done with a pape clip)

if the ac doesnt work why keep it?? really it just slows us down and gets in the way under the hood, the system weighs a fair bit i dropped mine

rob87 06-30-2010 12:18 AM

it has a new thermostat, just put it in about three weeks ago. I put it in then because I noticed the thermostat housing bolt was missing/broken, so I replaced it since I was working on that anyways. I'll check the codes here in a little bit. I have no warning lights that indicate any issues, just that the temp gets high at constant high speed over 20 minutes or so.

wstanek 06-30-2010 12:30 AM

Iuno im prolly just getting tired long day at work... haha... no but seriously long day.

rob87 06-30-2010 12:38 AM

just checked the error codes and I have no errors.

rob87 06-30-2010 12:40 AM

And yes, it has the OEM heat shield around the turbo.

Air in your System

If it started after you changed your thermostat I would think you have air in your cooling system. Time to Burp it.

CanadianBak'inSupra 06-30-2010 12:57 PM

agreed with batmmannn

its manditory that after flush, keep rad cap off and idle car until at operation temp and even keep going for another 15-20 mins.
this should remove air in the system.

think the term would be vapor lock. my buddie just did that to his truck but aparently he ruined his heater core, and still has not fixed his overheating problem.

rob87 06-30-2010 02:36 PM

Sounds good guys, I'll try that today when I get home from work. I did push it this morning on the way to work and the temp gauge never moved from its normal operating temp reading....????

batmmannn 06-30-2010 06:20 PM

Burping

When you do it park it facing up a hill. This gets the heater core lower than the radiator cap. Rev is to 3K a few times while clearing out the air. Like he said about 15 to 20 minutes with the rad cap off.

If this does not fix the problem, remove your thermostat and cut the dangle and drill a 4mm hole where the dangle was. Mine didn't clkear all the air till I drilled my thermostat.

Green7mgte 06-30-2010 06:50 PM

yea I heard someone suggest drilling a hole in the thermo.. still dosn't sit right with me.

besides i think the waterfall sound is COOL!
