Oilpan Removal????

Has anyone ever removed the oil pan with the motor still in the car? I've removed everything that the book says and then some. According to my manual it says to lift the motor "slightly". I've done that and more and still cant get enough room to bring the oil pan back enough to get it to drop..:(

slightly = 8 - 12" IIRC

ReelBandit 07-05-2010 08:31 PM

Can it be done without removing the engine?

cre 07-05-2010 09:09 PM

takes allot more than 12" to remove the engine.... so, um, yeah. :p

Run a search

Lots on the web about this. People say you have to do a lot of work to get that off including dropping the crossmember, unhooking the exhaust, lift the engine, remove the drag link.....UNNNGHHHH!

i was planing on doing my rod bearings from the bottom but we might have to change that plan... D=

Well, so far, I\'ve all but removed my engine, its hanging partly out of the engine bay right now. The book made it sound like most others, but NOT in this case...

Might as well pull it

If you have it that far you might as well just pull it. I have seen pics of them pulled with radiator removed and the trans still attached. Do the rear main crank seal and clutch plate while you are there. Can you throw some pics up so we can see your progress?

Can't do the main bearings or rear main seal with the transmission attached.... for that pull the engine.

Pulling the pan with the engine in the car isn't hard (been there done that). Personally, I'd recommend just pulling it, but I've had it off with the engine in the car and the wire harness all still connected. I have no idea what your problem is; you've just got to get the front of the engine elevated a dozen inches or so (I think it was closer to 8") and you don't even need to pull any cross members. Is your engine swinging forward as you lift it? Do you have a leveler?

ReelBandit 07-05-2010 11:33 PM

Yes I have a leveler. It just seemed no matter what I tried I still lacked a 1/2" of clearance to get the pan off.( with the tranny attached) Doesn't really matter now that I've pulled the motor partially out. I forgot to bring my camera today or I would upload pics. Gunna call it a day for now. I will be back on it after work tomorrow. Can the oil pump be rebuilt???? Thanks for all the input!

I wouldn't bother, I'd just replace it. If the impellers have any significant cavitation you can bet the housing does too.

No idea why you couldn't get it clear, but at least you got it. Toyota's use of the term "slightly" is very misleading... to me that's just high enough for the motor mounts to rise clear of the subframe.

I took the pan off one time to replaced a burnt piston. So it is possible.

Pics

Still want pics.... gonna have to do this myself I fear, so pics are golden!

ReelBandit 07-06-2010 01:45 AM

My hats off to ya FRISBEE cause I coudn't do it!:rofl2: Finding out about the "slightly" was a good lesson today. I would hate to see what "alot" would be! When I get statred on it again, I will make sure to take some pics.
