ticking and or nocking sound help please
i have a 87 non turbo supra 5 speed. i bought the car and it has a tapping sound. i talked to a tech and he said it was nth to worry about it was just one of my lifters tht went loose. he said i could drive the car and not have any probs so last night i did an oil change on my supra putting in 20w-50. and this afternoon i was driving it and the tapping became increasingly loud to the point it could hear it over anything else. my car cut off three times while driving it and wen i got it home it started to over hear. i let it sit for a few hours and took off the valve covers to fine spark plugs 3-6 soaked n oil and cracked. i looked at all the caps that hold the cams in place and all were still tight. im hoping its the head that just needs work. any info would help a lot.

IMO 20-50 is too thick for daily driving use. The thicker oil is going to increase pressure, but at the cost of restricting flow. Your tapping may have gotten worse by oil starving the engine with that 20-50 oil...
Tapping, knocking, ticking, etc. is never "no big deal". That is a sign that something is not adjusted or operating properly. Using thicker oil is nothing more that taking aspirin for a headache; it covers the symptoms. Drain your oil, put something along the lines of a 5-30 or 10-30 oil in the car, and see if the ticking "hopefully" goes back to how it was. Also, oil in the plug valley is usually caused by leaking valve cover gaskets or a no.3 cylinder head cover gasket (that's a part of the piece that runs the length of the engine over the spark plug valley). Do a quick search on the forum here and you'll find a dozen or so threads on the topic.

Ah, didn't catch that the first time I read through. If it's knocking now and overheating, the damage is done....

That or you could tear into the one you have, find out what caused it, and then possibly rebuild it.

Same thing happened to me, it first started as a very soft ticking sound then one day when i was driving it did a quick stall when i was getting up to speed. I found out it was a rod knock after taking the oil pan off and seeing if there was a loose rod and sure enough there was. happened to me in november and im still working on rebuild of the turbo 7m i got from a buddy of mine. when you have a job where you only get paid 200-300 every two weeks and schedule like mine it sucks! but im close to being finished, this was my first swap on my second car and i know more about this engine and how everything works before I even bought it! crazy huh!?
