Electric fan relay
I just (finally) finished changing the timing belt on my 87 MKIII turbo, and it ran fine for 50 miles or so.
Couple days ago, I switched on the A/C for the first time during a really hot day, and (perhaps coincidently) a mile or two later the engine suddenly lost all power and would barely run. I had to have it towed to a garage. Next morning, the mechanic called to say it started right up and runs fine! After poking around, he discovered the electric fan relay is dead. And that Toyota no longer carries a replacement relay. Questions: 1. Does all of this make any sense? Has anyone experienced this? Could overheating due to a non-functioning electric fan have caused my breakdown? 2. Any ideas on what a substitute fan relay might be? This is a strange one, at least to me! Paul |

Shouldn't be any problem replacing any of the condensor fan relay's with standard Bosch type relays... or find one used. I'm really surprised to hear they don't make them any more though....

Thanks very much for your reply. That's a great electric diagram. I may go down to Toyota myself to double check on availability of that relay. Now that I know where the relay(s) are, I'll pull them and check them out. I think the shop probably noted the fan wasn't running with A/C on, and that it did run when the relay was jumpered. Who knows? I just got done reassembling everything after I replaced the timing belt, and it wouldn't be the first time I forgot to reconnect a wire or something . . . . good thing I'm not a surgeon Can you rell me how to find a Bosch replacement? Does it seem possible that a condenser overheat could put engine into cardiac arrest? Paul |

Depends on the situation really.... If it's really hot out and you're pushing the car had yes, the lack of additional airflow could contribute to overheating. I still think it's likely something else contributed or was the primary factor such as the timing being retarded. Check the mechanical and spark timing again.
A "Bosch" relay... youo see them everywhere... they come wir car alarms, foglight kits, Buicks.... I'm surprised your mechanic didn't just wire one in.
