Definatly have symptoms of ball joint or possibly a strut. And ur friend watching under ur car while moving sounds dangerous I wouldnt recommend that at all. Easiest way to check ball joint is put it on a jack stand and grab the top and bottom of tire and see if u have any play. If u have any at all its a bad ball joint.
Keep your friends out from under your car

Brakes are a possibility as well. Any noises while moving at a steady slow pace? Does the noise show up regardless of brake pressure? Is the noise always a steady pattern?
I'd inspect ball joints and Brake components for signs of seizing or poor alignment.

there is a ball joint replacement guide in the faq. you can get a set (left and right front wheels) tie rod ends + ball joints off ebay for about 100.
Think someone on here tested it and proved ok. but I heard mixed things about oem ebay parts.
