Brake issue!
Hello I have a 1990 Supra Turbo with anti-lock brakes that aren't functioning correctly. The brakes when applied go all the way to the floor, become rock hard and barely work and you need to apply them again to stop. There are no leaks, and this happens the same whether the car is on or off. Also there is no brake light indicator.....just crappy brakes. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

you got brake fluid in the master cylinder?
either A: you have a pretty bad leak... B: massive air in the brake lines... C: a bad master cylinder did you do any brake work in the last few days? more often than not on older cars ( happened to me) you go to change the brakes and you will be advised to put a block of wood behind the brake peddle. to stop the peddle going all the way to the floor and over extending the "rubber" inside the master cylinder. the "rubber," "rips." and you need to rebuild or buy a new master cylinder. (proof your master cylinder is faulty) you bleed and bleed and bleed but your brakes are still soggy.. You also see no leaking! 60 dollars auto zone and 3 minutes worth of work. See the thread "maw and pa kettle change their brakes" do a search for it. i re read your thread. no leaks.. no brake light.. brake light is only a sensor showing you when your fluid is low. no leaks means no low fluid, no light... |
Thank you Sir! The fluid is full so I'll swap the master cylinder, I mean really it can only be a few things? I checked at Autozone and the master cylinder is $75 and the booster is $239, both have to be special ordered. Honestly a 20 year old car it couldn't hurt to replace them even if they are still functioning. Again thanks!

eh you probably dont need to replace the booster.. its just a drum with some seals in it.. acts as a vacuum.
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...aspx?S=BR&P=15 but eh couldnt hurt any oh do be carefull when bench bleeding the new MC. they give you RUBBER NUTS.. don't break on off in there like i did. causes problems if you cant get it out and it gets sucked down into the brake line.. like it did for me ;( good luck and be sure to check that thread out.. has pics of the MC install http://www.toyota-supra.info/forums/...ir-brakes.html eh you can skip all of that and just read this http://www.toyota-supra.info/forums/...-brakes-2.html the only page that really matters. |
Will do and thanks a bunch!!
|
yep. post back and tell us how it went.
|
I sure will and if any blood starts to squirt out from the cuts I'll undoubtedly get, I'll post pics!! :bigthumb:

Well it seems a few gentle taps with a hammer on the master cylinder and the brakes suddenly start working properly......no doubt time for a new master cylinder!
