I've never worked much with automatic transmissions but the first thing I can think of that would also account for intermittent problems and diagnostic codes is the computer. Have you tried swapping in a different ECT? And speed sensor error from the ECU? Speedometer still moving?

The ECT gets one of it's two speed signals from the speedometer... if the speedometer is messed up I'd bet the ECT isn't going to behave. The TPS is another thing to check. I'm not sure what switch you refer to , but generally if any of the switches were turning on and off at random you'd have problems. Look at the wiring for the switch (it it's not the gear selection switch) and try bypassing it and going for a short drive.
Is there anything else wrong with the car?

You r screen name just hit me... so I presume you have a 1JZ. Might want to mention that or put it in your signature. The link I posted is from the Toyota Service and Repair Manual for the USDM MKIII which was never available with the 1JZ. For a 1JZ manual you'll do well to check the UK and AUS websites. A link has probably been posted here in the past, or you could also check the swaps section over at supramania.com.... I know it's been posted there.
TPS - Throttle Position Sensor, probably 99% of EFI equipped cars have them. They're always (well, almost) on the throttle body. And TPS is the standard acronym, nothing specific to Toyota.
