K&N filters, Performance chips - Are they worth it?
My MKIII is completely stock 7mGE. It is driven by a docile automatic transmission. I would like to bump up the horsepower a little without going crazy on all sorts of mods.
I am not interested in the cost to put on a cold air intake. Would it be worth it however to swap the fram air filter with a K&N without doing the full kit? I read somewhere it would be pointless but want your opinions. I have also considered a performance chip, but see very conflicting information in regards to their efficiency and the actual increase in power. http://www.performancechipsdirect.com/Toyota/Supra/ Thanks! |

Yeah just do yourself a favor and realize a 7mge auto will never be fast. It maybe fun to drive and have decent power but not a fast car. I have put alot of money into mine and still don't have a fast car. And I have intake, header, full exhaust and p and p head. If you want any power swap in a 7mgte since it has so much more potential than an n/a.

Yeah I hear ya. I should have researched a little more before I bought the car. I figured a 200 hp motor would give me a little more fun, and it's not bad I just want to run quicker. I dont know if it's worth the cost for me to swap in the turbo for another 30 HP.
Maybe I will just keep her clean and resell her. |

I've got too much into mine to resell it so thats why my wife drives it and I drive my 2000 Celica GTS 6spd that has 180hp and weighs only 2600lbs. Which is the problem with the supra, 3600lbs is alot of weight for only 200hp. Although the supra handles very well after all the suspension upgrades I did, it is still slow to get up and move and sucks down a decent amount of gas. As I hate to say it so much, but you could get a mustang GT and be faster than a mk3 with a 7mge with more than a couple grand into it.

I probably overpaid a little. Guy listed car for 3900, then relisted for 2900 and I got him down to 2500. 1990 with 195000 miles and rebuilt engine at 130000. 2 owners on the car. No body damage. Interior is in awesome shape. It is a good little car just want it to go a little quicker. I agree the weight is an issue. Not much of a mustang fan so I will probably start looking at 350 camaros again. At least I can work on a 350, lol.
Dont get me wrong i really like the supra, and was not so displeased with the test drive when I bought it. I dont know, see what happens. |

Even with a 5speed you still have power loss through the tranny which is generally around 15%. All a manual does is make it easier to better use the engines power band, hence why 6spds are becoming more common.

the swap to a 7m-gte is pretty worth it. Not for the 30hp, but for the incredible potential to get more. not to mention the large torque increase which is what really matters in such a heavy car.
Par example! -put a full exhaust on a 7M-GE, and gain maybe 5whp. - put a full exhaust on a 7M-GTE, and gain 25whp. You're right in saying the that the 30hp might now sound worth it on face value. But if you want a car that's a bit quicker! then thats what you need. plus life isn't quite the same without boost |
