Rear Lights blinking and fading.. FIXED!
I am posting here in case anyone else has the problem. In my 1988 MKIII my tailights were doing very odd things (even pulsing in time to the sub woofers). I could never be sure they worked at all and had friends follow me to tell me what they were doing.
Well.. I pulled the rear lights off, replaced the seals (they were old and cracked.. good thing to do) and then looked at the wiring. Inside the cover that holds the lights, I found 2 screws that hold what looks to be grounds. Surprisingly they were backed off almost 2 full turns. Tightened them and the lights work perfectly. This may be a normal issue over time or just someone being careless.. but its a quick thing to check if you are having that issue. I cant find my original post regarding this so I just posed the solution to my problem in case anyone else has issues and this helps.

Me too
I just had the sam issues. I also found the same problems with the screws being loose. It must be fairly common.

yes, and what pisses me off is I have had the issue for about 6 months and ignored it thinking I was going to have to rip out the interior and trace wires...
only to find out .. all I had to do was pop off the white cap holding the lights and look at it...
