Default Mirror Supports

So I've finally got sick enough of the wind noise from the corners of the mirror supports where the window comes up and over time cracks the seal. It is all one piece of rubber seal and metal for the support. The stupid things were about $85 a piece. Would anyone be intersted in pics of the replacement ? If not I won't bother, but since most of your cars are older then mine I figure it might be helpful.

yes id be interested in pics. i may even be able to fab a removable insert. but i think the only thing that makes the rubber/felt insert non removable is they rivet it to the track. Chrysler does this which makes replacing a broken window really hard.

^^^ yup, just compress it. If you still have noise check your window stripping, it may be sealing at low speeds or stopped but not have enough pressure against the glass to prevent air from coming in while moving.

Yeah mine have a nice crack at the top on both sides. I figure I will just replace them and be done with it rather than trying to mess with it. Its kind of funny, on my 2000 celica the door and the support are one so it is just a nice new triangular seal for only 15 each compared to these expensive things.

Well I got them in and no more wind noise from them.

Old versus New. As you can see the old one has a nice gap where the window was for 20 years.

The first step is to remove the door panel which isn't too bad, but I have done it a few times already.

Here are the 3 phillips head screws that attach the mirror. They can be a real pain to remove since toyota used thread lock. I only had to drill one out since the head became too stripped. I replaced them with nice allen head screws. And i didn't take a picture of it but there is a small screw that hold the door gasket that will also need to be taken out.

Here are the two bolts that hold the top of the support, but the mirror must be removed first to get to them.

And finally remove this nut on the inside of the door that holds the bottom of the support.

In the end I think it was worth it. I don't think any fix to the old seal is near as good as a brand new seal.
