MkIII A/C conversion?
I have a 1991 supra, and the A/C works but doesnt have cold air, He said you cant charge freon anymore? and said that i have to change it to a modern day A/C?
is this true or can i fix the current one? |

They sell the recharge kits at auto stores for like 30-40$ there is a little black cap on the a/c unit

Yes and no... You (yourself) can not recharge your factory A/C, but any shop that reclaims R12 freon (like what our cars have) should be able to recharge your A/C unit without any modifications. R12 has been deemed a hazardous material, which is why you can't buy it off the shelf.
As Sonyps307 said, you can buy a recharge/retrofit kit from just about any auto parts store. These kits run around $40 and usually come with the adapters to convert your service ports from R12 to R134a refrigerant, as well as enough R134a to charge most systems. When doing a retrofit you have to take your car to a shop and have them evacuate all of the R12 in the system. What the kits don't tell you is that you also need to buy the correct amount and viscosity of compressor oil and that you have to remove your A/C compressor and drain all old oil from it. Removing the compressor means that you have to open up the A/C system, and every time you open the A/C system you should replace 2 components, I think they are the orifice tube and receiver/drier (I don't remember for sure which parts you replace so I would do some research on it).
