problems with abs
 

just asking to see if anyone can help. car is pulling to the left when i go 50+ and brake. took it to a shop today they said it was abs gone out on one side. i have another supra i can take it off of but want to know if its necessary to have abs on it or if i can take it off the front and the car would be ok? anyone who can help i'd really appreciate it, Thanks!:dunno:

not positive but i think you can just pull the fuse and be rid of abs

I would say this was... DEFINITELY NOT FAULTY ABS, AVOID RIP :frown: OFF GARAGE!!!

ABS is inoperative on any vehicle unless under heavy braking and then it employs a pump/valve system that releases pressure to any wheel starting to lock, sensed by it's ECU by a sensor on each wheel. the vast majority of ABS faults will show as the ABS light on the dash (the ABS is then switched off & you have normal non-antilock braking). Only in very limited circumstances, if ever, could ABS faults affect the way the car drives/brakes under normal conditions (so limited that I am confident in my above big black statement.)

The pulling to the left problem would more likely be associated with a siezed/sticking caliper or contaminated/worn out brake linings.

My advice would be that, if you're not confident playing with stuff like this yourself, best to find a different garage or someone who knows what they're talking about... please don't give that shop 100's of $$$ to "replace your ABS" while they perhaps replace a $25 set of pads :(

thanks for your help! as far as the abs system i've realized according to the manual and you and others saying the same thing that if it was that problem there would be a abs light coming on letting me know. the guy at the shop i took it too didnt know jack either cuz he would have noticed if it was that problem the light would be on. he just drove it and assumed. :umno: anyway im about to buy the calipers and get those changed because it does seem like thats what it is. either that or the brake lines but i've checked them and it doesnt seem like they have any leaks or problems. so hopefully this works. thanks for the advice tho its very much appreciated ! and you did make it in time :) im not taking my car to a shop unless i absolutely need to. my brother and dad who have supras as well are helping me out but they've never had this problem so were tying to figure it out together. but thank you again for your help! :bigthumb:

Calipers can just go bad. I had one a while back that just locked up one night and covered the whole wheel in brake dust in just a few miles. You could jack up the car and spin each wheel to check for binding.

Cool, glad you didn't go back to the shop. I'd bet any money the guy knew exactly what he was doing (trying to make an easy buck for christmas at your expense!)

Anyway hope you manage to get it sorted with the calipers. It could probably be fixed by cleaning/servicing the existing calipers but if you can afford the new ones (plus pads) that's all good & then you know they're fine. :D
