KS/Speedo Cable Problems? Plz Help
Hey guys, just bought an 87 N/A Supra. Basically its throwing a code 52, the speedo doesn't work, The overdrive light flashes over 40, and the car has literally no power hardly at all. Even if you floor it. I've done quite a bit of research on this website and it seems everyones pretty knowledgable. The trans goes into every gear smoothly. Just has no power, its not plugs or a fuel problem or anything little like that. Also I notice some wiring down there by the KS that didn't look too professional. Also I'm in Bloomington, IN with a foot of snow so I really don't wanna take the starter off Got any tips anyone?

The o/d off light flashing is a warning and code indicator for the transmission. Here is the Toyota repair manual for a 1990 but should point you in the right direction.

Wouldn't the tps throw a code? When its in park or neutral the engine feels like it has full power. It shifts through all gears fine. Just accelerates at maybe 25% percent of what it could

52 is a critical code and if the ECU is actively seeing the fault the ECU will go in to what is commonly known as "limp mode".... the ECU dumps in tons of extra fuel and pulls very large amounts of spark advance very effectively neutering your engine of any balls it once had.
The transmission problem is very likely due to the inoperable speedometer. The speedometer is where the speed signal for the transmission is generated. Fixing the speedometer and the knock sensor and/or its wiring may be the sum of what's needed to restore power and driveability.

See if you can pull the code for it. It gives instructions in the link on how to do it. All you should need is a small piece of wire or paper clip.

You guys are reassuring! Is the next sensor common to go out or is the wiring most likely? Its an Indiana car and I'm sure its had the piss ran outta it. The elements aren't exactly forgiving up here.

Oh, and btw I pulled the code it was a 52 ^^above. I'm pretty sure the flashing is just because of the speedo sensor. I'm on a pretty low budget so I'm lookin to fix the one thats making the car fall on its face first.

They can both make it fall on it's face... you not listening? The speed signal is required for the ECT to calculate when to shift. The knock sensor error I've already explained in detail.
It's more common for the knock sensor's wiring to degrade than for the sensor's to go bad. A rewire using radio grade coax is common and recommended... from the sound of it the previous owner may have tried that and either did it wrong or poorly OR the knock sensor is indeed bad. How much the speedo cable will cost to replace depends on which segment and where you buy the replacement. The lower segment should be under $25. Are you doing your own work or paying a shop? If you're on a budget and don't expect that to change or if you need a reliable daily driver or you can't do your own work then these probably aren't the cars for you.
