California 1JZ-Gte or 2JZ-GTE

Hey Guys, ive post many posts and this posts is the one i want answers to. I currently have a Mk3 Supra 1988.5 Turbo with a 7m-gte. Everything in the car is stock and no after market mods.

I met a guy who had a Mk3 Supra as well and he had a 2jz-gte in it =O well i didnt ask him how much it costed him but all i knew was that he did it himself (hes a mechanic).

If i were to buy the 1jz-gte or a 2jz-gte online, the harness, and wiring and everything how much would it cost for the labor and everything?

Anyone live near Nor or So Cal that did it before?

Is 5K enough or would it cost more since the labor might cost 1-3K?

How long would it take you guys think?

I wanan do a swap.....

Before I looked into the price, I would be thinking about how you're going to legally smog that in CA. Start your research by talking to the Bureau of Automotive Repair. They're going to have to approve ANY engine swap done so that it will pass smog.

I have a 1j in my mkiii. It cost me a total of about 4k with me doin all the work including extending the harness.. the 1j will pass smog with a little help. But it won't pass the visual inspection bein there is no emission system on it at all. But the 2j you can get the emissions off of a US mk4 you can also use the US mk4 harness and not have to extend it. That's the joy of having a US version of the 2j. As with the 1j you have to extend the harness 18" and you have no emission system. But with the 2j it has a rear sump oil pan so you would then add 500+ bucks for a 1jz oil pan and pick up from driftmotion. And the twins on the 2j are alot better turbos then the 1j but that comes at a price. The turbos on the 2j hit the firewall and require it to be beat in about 6" or ante up 1500 for a single turbo swap.... so to answer your question in your situation (living in cali) 2j would be the best route for you but..... your lookin more around 7-8k atleast!

As for time it took me 1 week is all to do it. The 1j swap is really pretty straight forward. (except wiring).

But do what BTwilson says very first. See what's allowed and what's not! I kno there are quite a few people in cali with both jz engines.
