New Here need help!
Hi guys,
Just bought my first Toyota supra, it’s a 1990 3.0 turbo auto. Im not new to the jap car scene and had a skyline a few years back so it’s nice to be behind the wheel of a proper car again. Thought I’d make a post to intro myself. Also have a question about the head gasket, it has gone and am unsure which is the best to go for in your experience? I am set on going for a metal type and have been told to use new bolts but 1 person and told to re use the old bolts as the new ones stretch and can cause you problems when they stretch and blow the gasket again? So any feedback would help, I have done some research on a few supra forums but its always nice to here from peoples personal experience Thanks Terry |

Do not re use your head bolts. Go with arp studs or bolts
To use a metal gasket you have to have a really smooth finish that can only be acheived by machine shops on both head and the block.. Or to save your self from tearing your engine apart. Swap a 1jz in. It will be the best decision you ever make! Although 7m are wicked engines. They just are not near as reliable as a jz. And you don't have to open it up to make it reliable! Just my opinion everyone has there own on this subject!

Toyota head bolts are fine; they don't stretch. You can reuse your head bolts, but I would still recommend replacing them anyway. I wouldn't put much faith in 20+ year old fasteners.

I don't know who I buy from that would ship to the UK, sorry. If any of those shops do it's probably still cheaper for you to buy locally. You may want to ask that on a UK specific Supra site.
BT's right about the headbolts. None of the Supras used TTY head bolts (Torque To Yield)... In other words they're not tightened until they're at the edge of their elasticity. TTY bolts are only good for one use. If you look through the TSRM you'll find it has the TTY bolts labeled at the beginning of each section. Still, I too I prefer not to rely on 20 year old fasteners. If you're not going with a massive build new Toyota bolts are fine. My personal preference is for studs though.
