How can you tell if you have a early or late 89.

Might start with the build date; It's on the info tag in the door jamb. Is there something in particular you're trying to figure out?
Sept. through Aug. is the build period for a given model year in North America. I some countries it's dictated as the date range which it was sold. So by JDM standards what we consider an early '89 is still an '88. For us a car built 9/88 is a '89 as it was built for the '89 model year. Confused yet?

I found the date I think it said 12/88. Also when my motor got rebuild I remember that the crank had a 6m and not 7m

Hmm... the build date indicates an earlier '89 (10/88 to 9/89). The crank is the lighter, higher RPM capable version which did appear in the earlier 89's.
Do you have the '89+ gauges? What color are the ECU plugs (Yellow or Grey? Grey is the "'pre89")?

Well on driftmotion he has 2 tps's on his site one for 86-89 and one for 89-92. So I'm thinking I need the 86-89 it has a Blue sticker on it. I remember mine having a blue sticker on it before the sticker came off.

Look at the tabs inside and on the throttle body. Pre89 is horizontal, 89+ is vertical..... to the best of my recollection, anyway. Either one can be made to fit, but why bother going to that effort if you don't need to eh?
