Strange Noise in Engine
 

'88 NA MkIII

A noise has recently started up in the engine. It seems to be located in the rear, more to the drivers side. It has a plastic tone to it and is tied to the engine revs. Most pronounced when cold, it almost goes away after warming up. I would compare it to the sound of a mechanical tach cable going out if the car had one. Any ideas?
