no start,cps questions
Just recently my 86.5 mk3 7mgte manual ran fine before parked but now it just cranks and cranks and just won't start. happened once before but I wiggled the cps connector wires and she started right back up.
I think I dont have spark, I used a spark tester and no spark but coils fine soooo.... cps..? this time I decided to take the dust cover off of the cps and noticed it wasn't aligned how I've seen it aligned before. the first picture is how my cps looks as is still on the car with cover off. the second picture is from shaeff's cps alignment write up, as you can see mine is way off or is it supposed to be at TDC to line up? some1 point me in the right direction here.

Yes, that's with the engine at TDC on the compression stroke.

soooo... mine (fig.1) is in different position because the engine is not set to TDC/compression stroke? it's about an inch off compared to shaeff's (fig. 2)
is this normal? setting the crank to TDC will move it to the original position like in (fig.2) ? (I appologize but I've never seen or worked with this kind of sensor before..)

yes it is normal, as the engine rotates so does the CPS. it is gear meshed witht the cams and spins with them, its basically like a distributor but instead of using points of contact to send the spark through wires it sends a signal to the coils.

Follow the instructions at the link below. Also, if you have not removed the CPS or done anything else to cause it to be out of alignment since last start up, then its most likely not the sensor alignment. I had the same issue as you. Came to find out the wires on the harness side of the CPS connector were barely making a contact inside the back of the connector. Once I fixed this, the car has had no issues. There is a lot of heat on that side of the engine due to the exhaust being on the same side. Also you state that wiggling the wires caused it to start the last time. That would lead me to believe that there is a connector issue and not an alignment issue.
Also, when installing the CPS per the TSRM, the pick up will rotate as you push the CPS in place. Since the CAM and sensor both have helical gears, its unavoidable. The instructions account for this and so you do not (should not) compensate for the movement when installing. Once done, you can set the final timing as described in TSRM as well. http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...ection=IG&P=21 Hope this helps...... |

+1 about the wiring. It is the supra's weakness. If you didn't take out the CPS it is not likely it's alignment will be the problem.
If you need to drive it right away, just cut the connector off and use heat shrinking butt-connectors to connect the wires together until you can properly repair the connector. This is not the cleanest way to repair it, but it is very fast, cheap and effective. I have also successfully replaced this connector with Weatherpack (GM) 4 wire connectors from NAPA. It is a much better connector. If you have the time to repair it cleanly, back probe the connector with a ohmmeter to find the bad connection and replace or repair the offending pins. |

I really appreciate the info. I will be getting a weatherpack GM 4 wire connector this week and swap out the old one.

Not much to touch on as far as the wiring goes, it's only 4 wires. Just do them one at a time if you don't trust your memory or schematic deciphering skills. If you just want to change the cps connector I'm gonna do one this week, I will take some pics. It's very easy and I will be using the Weatherpack connector.

yea please, keep me posted. So what you just cut it from the connector and wired them in again one at a time.. I could do that. Was thinking about ordering the replacement from driftmotion.
