It sounded like I needed new brakes..

I need your help. I just bought an 86.5 supra and I thought I needed brakes, it made a loud squeeking noice every time I stepped on the brakes. The previous owner changed the regular wheels to wider ones that came off an infinity but not sure if that is affecting and causing that noise. I went to the local auto parts place and bought all new pads. As I took the wheels off, I realized the pads were still in almost new condition. I have no idea why it squeeks. A friend said it could be that I might need wheel spacers or change brake brands.
Well, any input will be greatly appreciated.... Any suggestions?

You can also get loud squealing from brake pads if they don't have anti-squeal shims on the back of the pads.

I would take the pads off and put the anti-squeal stuff on the back of them (your auto parts store will know what you're talking about). Put it anywhere on the pad it touches anything else, just don't put it on the actual friction material otherwise you'd have no brakes.

Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it. I'm heading to the parts store right now...:outahere:

Squealing is pretty common on semi metallic pads. Ceramics are much quieter. Otherwise, as I was taught, squealing is a result of the brake pad vibrating because of poor fitment or quality.
Try what btwilson86 has recommended with the anti-squeal stuff on the back of the pads where they contact the caliper. It pretty much just glues them to the caliper. I would also recommend inspecting the brakes visually and check for missing parts.

Funny story about anti squeal spray. A guy I worked with asked me why his brakes squealed even though he had just put new pads on it (81 corolla). I asked him "Did you use any Brake Quiet?". He said no, so I gave him a can out of my tool box and watched him go over to his car. Without even glancing at the directions he proceeded to spray it ALL OVER HIS ROTORS!! I was floored. He said it actually made the brakes much quieter.

haha +1. I use brake quiet evertytime I change my brakes. I bought a can and never use it so I have to justify my 2.50 somehow. oh and to touch on the OP topic. Since the brake pads been switched from espestice to organic or semi-mattalic. there is a level of squealing we have to deal with. Hence the black glued on parts to the brakes.
