Stripped Exhaust studs
Looking for best solution to repair stripped exhaust studs. I see DriftMotion sells a helicoil repair kit and another company called Time-sert sells thread repair inserts.
Anyone have experience with either of these or have an alternate suggestion ? Also, is it possible to remove the exhaust manifold with the turbo intact (disconnecting oil and water lines of course). Thanks for the help. |
Yes they work, but the material on the head is sometimes beyond being able to hold even a heli-coil. The drift motion kit is nice because they did the shopping for you. You could buy it yourself all separately but I doubt you'd save much. There really is no other alternative beside replacing the head.
You prolly could leave the turbo on but I would take it off and give it a good cleaning and inspection while it's easy. |
Exhaust studs
Thanks for the feedback.
The DriftMotion kit includes oversized studs so I should be okay there. I'll probably see about rebuilding the turbo if only to replace the oil seals as the car burns oil when the turbo kicks in hard. Probably a good idea to play it safe and have the exhaust manifold shaved too. Thanks again for your help. |

IIRC the kit offers acouple different sizes? maybe not, it's been awhile since I read on the subject. Altho I do remember the guy who makes them said he only put a 5 dollar mark up on it. or you could do what I did for a stripped exhaust bolt.. concrete lag bolts. what? don't look at me like that. ....

lol...concrete lag bolts.... nice!! Do they come in grade 8?
