Turbo whistle what could it be?
Hey guys im new to the forums and i just bought an 88 toyota supra turbo and i have started to here a whistle sound that i didn't hear before. Ive have only had the car for about 1 week. The guy who had this car before looks like he didn't know what he was doing he put silicone on the turbo inlet pipe and it has since come off and there is a big hole there. This is not my first turbo car but i am not sure if it could be that hole that im hearing that noise or could it be the turbo. I really cant step on it cause i need a maf sensor mine is shot. As soon as i connect it the car stalls out. Do you guys think it would be ok to run the car like that until i can get the maf it cost $400 new and i cant find it used. And do you guys think that sound im hearing could be a bad turbo. Need Help.

The "whistle" sound is normal for a spooling compressor wheel. Thanks to the "big hole" in your intake tube, it is much more apparent.
That hole is allowing any dirt / dedris, in close proximity, to be sucked into your engine as well. MAF? Perhaps you mean KVAFM? At any rate, running the car with a hole in the intake and the AFM disconnected is not advised. |

with the afm disconnected it goes into safe mode and you run really rich which in return spools the turbo easier than normal so its a more apparent noise.

that accordion hose (turbo inlet hose) isn't pressurized (advice a good friend of mine gave.) tape that bitch till you get a new one.. 50 or 60 from champion, you can have it in 3 days. as for the AFM you can get a used one from a junk yard. try looking for an LS 400. I just purchased a new to me, AFM for 75 bucks.. and I did tape and silicone my accordion hose when it cracked and broke on me for 3 days while my new one was being shipped.
it works man.

I know its not good to run the car like that cause with the car runing so rich it can thin out the oil and cause a worse problem. But man i really need to get this car back on the road. The previous owner didn't seem to know what they were doing to much and once i get this fixed i will start to bring it back little by little to what a supra should be. It just sucks to see what people to these classic cars.

"Safe mode" or "Limp mode" isn't set very easily and when it's active it's completely unmistakable... the car will run like CRAP (and barely that well). Unplug a knock sensor and go for a spin... it's awful.
