BHG Symptoms, troubleshooting ??
'87 Turbo 140K miles. Aw geez what next? . . . driving today and suddenly lost power in 1 and 2 gear, shaking on acceleration. When I stopped I could smell sweet burning smell. Was told there was white smoke coming thru exhaust, 10 minutes after I shut it off. Just replaced the timing belt last year, and I hate to go thru that again. Can someone give me a good troubleshooting procedure to determine if I have a BHG? Good winter project I suppose . . . can't imagine what it would cost to shop out. Any suggestions?
Thanks |

I'm sorely tempted to tell you to not bother spending time on diagnosis... Whatever it is (out of 2 total options) the head is coming out at a minimum. But, I don't like doing a laborious job unless I'm sure I need to. From what you describe a basic compression test and checking the oil and coolant for contamination should tell you all you need to know.

I ran a compression test today. Here are my numbers.
1 = 155 psi 2 = 125 3 = 110 4 = 105 5 = 140 6 = 145 Can you give me any further thoughts? Should I do a leakdown test as well . . . I can borrow a tester. Just want to make sure i get all the info I need now. Thanks |

tsrm is saying a 14psi difference between cylinders. and Minimum pressure should be 128psi.
