Help!!!!

Hey guys i just got the afm today and all i could do is connect it to the harness cause i can't put it in the housing until i get some screw extractors to take the old screw out. Well before with the old afm the car would turn on and then stall out now when i connected the new one to the harness it stayed on but after a few minutes the cars idle started to go up and down and when i would try to rev it it would only reve to about 3000rpm im not sure but could it be that its not in the intake housing so it cant read the air correctly is this why or could it be my idle air control valve. Im just not sure.
