MkIII rear end ?'s
Hi,
I'm looking into using a mkIII rear subframe/suspension/diff setup on an AWD GMC Jimmy I'm working on. I've read a post somewhere saying the track width (flange to flange) is 62" for the mkIII, and a spec sheet for the mkIV saying 60". Can anyone verify either of this info? Second question, since the center section is toyota 8", does the v6 solid axle pinion fit inside the diff casing? I need to run 3.73/4.10/4.56 sets to match the front, and these are all popular pickup gears. I know the carriers fit the solid axles but not work the other way around. C) It seems there are 2 types of limited slip diffs available, the clutch pack and the torsen. This won't see any off-roading, just street/rain/snow. Powerwise, no more than 400hp at crank from a genIII 5.3. Which is more street friendly, but still reliable? 4) If all this checks out, any good places to look for one in southern Ontario/Nothern States close to the border? Thanks in advance, Yeroon Last edited by Rizzle; 08-16-2011 at 11:30 PM. |

You will need to make a custom driveshaft with the rear flange from the toyota drive shaft and the slip yoke to your gm trans. The toyota pinion will not mate to the gm drive shaft and the gm pinion will not fit in the toyota housing. If you were willing to travel as far as chicago, I can sell you everything you will need including the 4.3 LSD all from california so it's completely rust free.
The (stock) torsen diff was only used in jza70 supras, i think. Clutch type are much more common and pretty easy to rebuild if needed. |

No good pictures, theres nothing cool done yet. The 2door frames been lengthened, stripped of anything not being used, and the engines assembled with custom mounts mocked up. I'm making sure I got driveline/chassis #'s dialed before I go looking for all my parts.
No insults to you I6 runners, the v6 ref was for the toyota pickup gears, since there's 4cyl pinions/carriers with smaller bearings, and the v6/turbo4 pinion/carrier bearings are bigger. One way swappable only. A topic on supraforums indicates the crush sleeve eliminator is the same, and the the supra carrier fits the trucks with some adjustment, so it SHOULD swap gears. However, there are 4.10 supra gears so I'm not stuck if they don't. No drive to chicago yet, sorry. Google says 9 hours, And I've barely started looking here, wanted to know everything is going to work width/gearing wise. You wouldn't happen to be able the measure the wheel mounting width would you? Yeroon |

The 4.10:1 was the torsen diff... It was only available on the JZA70 model (possibly the GA70 as well) and only an option at that. It does not do well in high torque applications though... It is VERY unpopular in the Supra community as far as mid to high end builders are concerned.
I believe Kaaz made a unit which was compatible with the carrier which was supposed to hold up better but I don't think it was great either... All of this is rather sad as I really prefer torsen for street driven vehicles. With regard to what options are available I'd try emailing or calling the people at MarlinCrawler.com. Honestly, given that you're already digging in for a custom setup there are a number of options from other manufacturers I'd look at versus keeping the MKIII's rear end. (I'm sure you've already got this in mind though.)
