If it's an automatic it *should* use Dexron-II.
Dex II is almost impossible to find, so you may use Dex-III (although I hear that's getting difficult to find too lol)

another question
i forgot to mention this before but, im having some issues with my transmission switching gears at the wrong rates. for example when my engine is cold i notice that it switches gears at 4-5000rpms, but when the engine is at normal running temp. it would switch gears at 2500-3000rpms

dex 111 or dex-merc 111 is readily available at almost any chain auto parts store.
sounds like your bands and/or clutches are showing some age, or you have low valve body pressure. either way, a tranny fluid exchange wouldnt hurt, but if the tranny is on its way out, the exchange could be a waste of money. how many miles does the tranny/engine have? try to determine how much wear the setup has before throwing money at it. for all you know the tranny may need rebuilt.
