Catalytic converter question
Supraholics - how long should a catalytic converter last? My 90 Turbo has 149,000 miles on the original one. How do you tell if one is bad? I only have one converter since the one just below the turbo has been removed.

hi the supportability is different.you can make a exhaust gas test or you to upgrade your 2.kat and look inside.when the comb are free and open and nothing is broken everything okay.

Mine HAD 150k on it. I still passed the Calif smog test. I replaced it when I had a custom exhaust fabricated.
If an engine is kept in good condition, and problems that come up are fixed quickly, a cat can last a very very long time. What kills cats are: 1) physical damage (from hitting something), 2) running the car too rich a fuel mixture (burns them out), 3) oil burning engine, usually due to worn internal parts (coats the internals and so they can't function. I run a smog shop, so I know these things. |
i replaced mine when i got my full exhaust..that was about 89k when i had my 7m, but i had to replace it anyways because the motor was running rich at the time...wasnt tuned yet...but a cat is supposed to last...dont really need to change it unless u cant pass smog...otherwise get it looked at

Thanks for the info. I'll just leave mine alone then since I have only the basic mod and it's not running rich.
