turbo questions..
alright so i have a few questions.. i have no experience with supras and little knowledge of turbos.. loads of experience with the 302 HO. but im buying my first and i will learn about it. im buying a 7m-ge 86.5 mk3. as you ALL know. its N/A. so the questions:
im gunna buy a turbocharger from ebay. wanna run a little over a bar. gunna have it rebalanced and all that good stuff. but what kind of flanges will i need (t3, T4) so basically.. how can i tell if itll easily fit.. i was gunna get a new ecu because from understanding on the forums the 7mge engine doesnt take kindly to a turbo. anyone know something that'll get the job done until i can get a real high performance one. and finally for now.. anyone recommend a certain brand of turbos to look for? im not looking to spend lots of money now. im gunna buy cheap shit in the mean time and as paychecks come in, ill replace and upgrade.. any and all help is greatly appreciated. |

If i was you i would just get a 1JZ down the road and do that swap, if is about the same price as a 7Mgte swap and you can do alot more with it, plus parts seem to be more abundant. VVVV There are pictures of my Boosted Hyundai with a Dyno sheet to show proof, just to keep the flaming down!!! Last edited by Turboron_99; 11-23-2011 at 02:03 AM. |

i have always thought tiburons were sweet little cars. just shows how much you can do with anything.
but i dont have the tools to do a swap. im broke, young and new to foreign cars. but i pretty much just love hearing the boost and hearing blowoff valves with wastegate chatter.. its orgasmic. but i dont know who to trust for buying a JDM engine. its not too expensive. |

A 1JZ swap does not cost as much as a 7M-GTE and requires a good amount more patience and labor.
Personally I HIGHLY recommend that the novice avoid swaps altogether and just save until they can start with the desired platform. Save up another $500, buy a GTE and start upgrading from there. The 7M-GE is not built for forced induction (especially not a lot of it) and the electronics can't take it at all. You're looking at spending a grand just to get it close to on par with a stock GTE (reliably). As for JDM engines, used is used.... rebuild anything before you put it in or you're just wasting time. As for cheap eBay turbos? This is all the good stuff I have to say about them: I think that sums it up well.

I would just save, by it piece by piece. Then you can work on it slowly. A good way to learn about cars to. This is how i built the Tib, It was like a 4 month process of finding parts, making parts, then about a month from start to finish, and like another week or so messing with the Tuning software to get it to run good enough to drive it to my Tuner. Also Boost isnt cheap, parts break, it is a time consuming job for the swap i am sure. Also you have to be prepared cause nothing with cars every seems to go as planed! Also i am young to so dont use that as an excuse man, I am 23, I built my Tib by myself, I read a few books, Whored up the forums. Also money wise i am with you, I have the Tib, car cost me 4k back in high school, 2007 is when i picked it up, I put about 25k into it, went through 2 motors 4 tranny's. It is my drag car/ weekend toy to mess with the Local Honda Kids. As a Daily i drive my 89 Supra and on the nice days i got a SFV650K9 to plow around on. |

Corytebeau, I don't know how much experience you have from working on cars... Your intro in this thread leaves me thinking you've maybe done breaks and other maintenance work but nothing significant beyond that. A 25 year old car is not a good car to start learning on. A 25 year old MKIII is even worse. I like all generations of Supras, but people tend to underestimate the car, overestimate their ability, underestimate the costs and difficulties that come with it.... And for some reason MKIII owners specifically try to cheap out on EVERYTHING. Buy a Honda, break it 15 times and you'll still have less invested than you will if you start with a MKIII. If you're dead set on a turbocharged MKIII then save and buy a factory turbo MKIII that's already in good shape.
With that said, information regarding swaps is covered in the MKIII FAQ section. I suggest you dig through there for a little while.

cre, youre right about my experience for the most part, but only with american muscle engines like the 302, 351Cleveland and a few 454 Big blocks. im good mechanically but ive never even taken apart a six cylinder before. im trying to learn on it. its one of my buddies cars that hes selling me. its a hobby for me as i do heating and cooling as a career. i just wanna get a little bit better.. and as far as Honda engines go. i think the VTEC is extremely cool..just camming but its stilll nice. but thanks anyways cre for your oppinion and you too hyundia tiburan. ill think about it. maybe instead of turboing it i will find another way for higher performance.

There are no mods that will provide significant gains for a reasonable amount of money with the 7M-GE. Actually I have a few friends who've spent obscene amounts and have nothing to show for it that a stock GTE can't beat the crap out of with $300 in parts.... They've spent thousands (A couple are mechanics and one's a machinist, they're not paying any of that for labor). Do as you like, naturally. There's a lot of good info on this site and I hope you'll find it of use; There's also some bad info here and there, if in doubt, ask.
