Valve Cover bolt replacement
Hey guys i had a question i recently replaced the no.3 gasket and did the whole oil drain plug thing discussed on another thread and when i was putting back the valve covers the phillip screw bolts that hold them down gaveme problems when trying to torque them down i ended up strippin the top on two of the screws.. my question is what kind of bolts should i replace ALL of them with and also if i should put washers or use the gold looking washers on the stock bolts on their right now.. thanks..** i read this post: http://www.toyota-supra.info/forums/...placement.html but their talkin about two different type of bolts, which one should i go with?

Either conventional hex head bolts or flange head hex bolts... The flange head have a round flare at their base providing a little more distribution of the pressure. These aren't supposed to provide a lot of pressure anyway and just about anything will do if washers are used.
BTW - If you stripped the philips you're either not using the right size screw driver (it's a #3, IIRC) or you're tightening them way too much. Tighten them the 12 in lbs they're spec'd for. If they leak after that then replace the seals and make sure you didn't forget the RTV at the #1 cam caps. Again, that's 12 INCH lbs, NOT FOOT lbs! |

Yeah the reason why I stripped them was because I didnt have the right screw driver and those two bolts wudnt go in all the way and I kept trying till I stripped them and made it worse.. And the torque is 22in lbs for the bolts http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...l.aspx?S=A&P=6 |
Ah yes, 22... Thank you, somewhere my memory got fuzzy. Hope I didn't post 12 in too many other places. :p Anyway, it is something which people very commonly mistaken to be ft lbs and end up breaking things and that's what I try to make sure people are aware of.
