Horsepower numbers?
 

Hey guys,
Im close to getting my first supra and was curious. What kind of horsepower are you guys getting and how much did you spend to get it?

You see people making all kinds of various numbers with the 7M.... I'd say that the majority of owners fall between 250 and 400 at the wheels. I know, that's a rather broad spread but it's accurate. There are plenty of people who push their luck and go for 400+ without rebuilding that 20+ year old motor and end up making 0 RWHP. :rofl2:

If this is your first Supra, but not your first hobby car and hopefully not your only car then fine.... But, if it's your first car and you expect to learn from working on it you should count on a lot of painful lessons and perhaps consider a better supported platform to begin with.

First project car. yes. First time working on cars. No. Im 20 and a mechanic and have always wanted a car to work on, and have always liked the mkiiis. How much money have you guys spent to get 300 - 400 horse?

What type of mechanic are you then? It is so easy to make really bad mistakes with these cars. Second raw horsepower is not enough. It has to be deliver through the power train to the wheels and there is more that needs to be done.

when my car is running i will be hoping to hit the 300hp mark.
but i have a 1uz Lexus v8 and i have burned too much money on the project.
probly over 2k now...

all in all. i can say i would be really happy if i had a turbo mk3 with lets say.... mandrel bent intake piping a sweet IC, and a oil and power steering cooler.i personally would not step to far away from stock without a complete rebuild.

I graduated with an associates in automotive and have my ase's done except for auto trans. I work in an independent shop.

I guess my real question is how much will i be spending to have a fun weekend car with more than enough get up and go. (including trans, driveline, suspension, ect upgrades)

this is not something you can put a price on. its always going to be an ongoing money pit. if i had it, i could spend 10k in one day on supra

Money Pit is a good way to put it. When it comes to hp numbers and get up and go, it is more of a matter of opinion. How fast do you want to go? I personally think somewhere between 300 and 400 hp is more than enough for the street. After all a mk4 turbo does 0 to 60 in about 5 sec. with 280 stock horses. But when it comes to the subject of money, an mk3 does not hold value anywhere near as well as a mk4. All the turbo mk3 s tend to be rather beat and require alot of money to make them reliable and fun again. After all you are talking about a 20 plus year old car. I don't think parts prices are to bad but are much more than parts for a honda civic or chevy 350. And in the end you end up with a car that has hours of work and far more money than its book value.

Having a lot of horsepower does not equal enjoyment. At 200 my guy can get me in a world of trouble. As for the money, how much is your pleasure worth? Really unless you race on a track, stock is very nice. Oh 907mge, what does "book value" have to do with anything?
