whats the best size exhaust for a 7mge
As the title says im looking to put a new exhaust on my 1987 toyota supra 7mge... Right now im not to sure what type of exhaust I have rigjt now ( its not stock at all ) but im not trying to ecit the exhaust out of my back bumper. Im looking to exit at either the front of the passengers rear tire or drivers side rear tire ...or even doin a y pipe and exiting on bothdriver and passenger front of the reat ire
And also should I straight pipe or do thrush glass pack(s) Aldo what size diameter exhaust should I getEx. 2.5" 2.75" 3"? |
I wouldn't go over 2.5" at the outlet. The larger the diameter the slower the gasses move, the quicker they cool and become denser and thus you lose the benefits of scavenging and create back-pressure.... despite what you may have heard or read, back-pressure is NOT good.... Then there's the simple fact that too large of an exhaust and the absence of devices used to reduce turbulence and smooth exhaust flow just makes an N/A sound like shit and you look like a clueless idiot (varies by area :P ).
2.5" and a good helmholtz type resonator (placed as far forward as possible but after the cat and a straight flow muffler with a spun stainless steel insulator, not fiberglass (like Borla's) works very well for the 7M-GE. |
on my old 87n/a 2.5 inch all the way back with headers, magnaflow muffler same size, no cat.
sounded alright. power was noticeably better. love the feeling of accomplishment after making a new exhaust, knowing everything is new and working good. |
My 86.5 Supra with the 7mge and 5 speed runs better with the stock exhaust. The abomination the punk who owned it before me took away power.
About the sound my guy has a distinctive sound when I takeoff under power. While not loud it carries :) |
I dislike the baffled resonator and muffler from the stock setup... but the kids take it way too far, often to the detriment of the engine's performance.
