1987 Supra son to own
Im about to buy an 87 supra, its a 3.0 L straight 6 cylinder with single turbo, i dont know much at all about them, but lets first start with the motor, seeing as its going to be an autocross car, what performance parts are available? its a little rough, its been sitting for awhile, motor works though. Second, for some reason it has no fuel system, no tank, lines, etc. Whats a good size and style of fuel cell and what all to go along with it (lines, pump, inline filter, etc)? my third concern, is the interior, its ragged, no carpet or headliner or anything, just seats and a dashboard and both are in BAD shape, so since its a racer, or soon to be, i dont want either of those, so what product could i use to coat the entire inside of the body shell with? I have a jeep wrangler that we had rhinolined inside, functions great, i want something like that. Thanks in advance!
(also might be pulling the motor and tranny and body all seperate, sandblasting the frame, etc, undercoating recommendations? and the hood and hinges are badly damaged, is there any carbon hoods with the pin style hold downs? like you see on street car based dragsters?) again, thanks! |
***soon to own*** , sorry

basically i wanna know the aftermarket availability to support this car in full autocross mode, street legal, but meant to be on the track.
heres 2 pics of the outside |
im currently trying to make mine an autocross car that can also function as a daily. the aftermarket i belive is there, just not as up and front like the mk4 that every one knows about. from shopping around suspension is expensive to upgrade but since tire rack.com sells suspensin its come down substancialy from sites like supra store and hoarsepower freaks. besides thoes few things on tire rack you really cant beat hpf.com, they even have a full build roll cage for the mk3 from cusco for 700$

thanks a lot pandrade! this is the kind of stuff i was looking for!

hey no problem, i love to help out. the mk3 might not be cheap but its well worth the investmnt, only cheap car i know is honda
|
Don't forget the miata. Just try an open a GRM magazine and not find several miatas. Part availability is so much better too.
|
cheap for parts, but to buy a miata in my area is EXPENSIVE, plus everyone's got one. i like to be difrent whith my ol'mk3
|
im 6'7", there is no way im even considering a miata, plus, toyota fan for life, their stuff jjust doesnt break!

IMO the MR2 is far better designed for this type of application. It's lighter to a degree that you can't achieve with a MKIII. It came with very close to the same amount of power as the 7M-GTE but carrying over 1000 pounds less weight. Shorter wheelbase more central moment of inertia (goes into corners like a madman.. the good kind of madman). MUCH better built. While fewer of these made it the US than the MKIII they're easier to find in good shape and have a lot more aftermarket availability. Quote:
MIATAS ARE FOR HAIRDRESSERS!!!! (So are MR-Ss.) |

dont get me wrong, miatas can be bad to the bone, and id love to smoke mustangs and porches in a miata, but i just dont fit...like, not at all lol. and an MR2...mid engine...that looks like a monster right there! imagine a 800hp 2JZGTE motor, in a mid engined, all wheel drive car as light as an MR2....talk about monstrous! and ive seen more men in the miata, by far, than women...scary...

a mr2 is a light body whith a really good motor, and superb handaling( imo a WAY better verson of miata) why mess whith it? and how would you ever stuff a 2jz into a mr2

Anyway, we're WAY off target now, it's my fault, my apologies. My point was simply that there are more reliable options which are far more nimble (which you really want for autocross) which can make a lot of power. As for the argument of the 1JZ or 2JZ being able to make 1000RWHP.... well, yeah, but it doesn't help here that's more of a drag race advantage. Building an autocross car for that kind of power is just throwing your money in the wrong place. |
