Honestly, as basic as that unit is I would take the car to a shop and get it tuned for $100-$150. It shouldn't cost much as it hasn't got even half the flexibility and features of the model that followed it. Install is yourself, zero out the dials and your car should run as if it isn't even there. Then get it tuned and save money.

It's not a difficult setup to tune though but yes, you need a laptop and you need a wideband with data logging functionality. You could do it on the fly with someone else driving and you staring back and forth frantically between the tach and the the O2 gauge but on the dyno they'll be able to dial it in much tighter than you will without a more sophisticated setup.

Um, not quite... That's like comparing a pad of paper to a laptop. The original SAFC, while very reliable, is very limited. What are you hoping to get out of it? Do you have any mods which need it?

Lean? Not likely. The ECU's fuel maps cover a much higher volumetric efficiency than you'll see with just basic bolt ons and added boost. It's not until you begin tampering with the whole equation, the bigger picture that you really need to worry about running lean. More often than not you find that you're actually still rich and need fuel pulled for better performance... If it is lean it's probably time to replace the fuel pump, filter and get the injectors serviced. Do let us know how it turns out though.
