What are you goals for the car. Ex auto x or drag, what bhp are you looking for. If you have a factory 7m gte why swap it out a 7m has 500cc's more. Yes the 1j might have more out of the box power but those 500 cc's will play into an equation but it all depends on you goals.

Obviously you need a motor that hasn't been abused, a tranny( I don't know if the r154 would hook up no problems, iv never done this swap) maby A different drive line. If your set on a swap you should rebuild the motor whith a mhg and what ever upgrades since you got the motor out and appart

This is covered in the FAQ... It's a neat little mystery land where Frequently Asked Questions are tucked away with their Frequent Answers.

As for which is better... That's not what this thread is about but opinions are always welcome here as long as you're not derailing the thread. That 500cc doesn't mean anything. The 1JZ is higher revving, handles more boost in stock form, has more advanced electronics (including a governor... ouch), and so on. The 7M isn't my least favorite Toyota engine but it's pretty low on my list... The 1JZ isn't at the top either though. They're close enough though that if you're looking >500 or 600 RWHP I'd advise rebuilding your current 7M over tossing in an untouched 1JZ with a bigger turbo. It'll cost less and is less likely to grenade on you. Now if you're going to fully rebuild either I'd go 1JZ but in the long run it's going to cost you at least twice as much money from beginning to end (if you're a novice).

I'm goin more into a drift/track car I don't intend to build more than 400bhp I've always heard jz's were very tough motors that why I originally started looking into this swap

Put in a 3S-GTE and get the weight BEHIND the front wheels. ;)

Yes, the JZ's are very robust. The JZs and the 3Ss still rank at the top of Toyota's flagship engines. Not saying they're still #1 but they're still hanging with the newcomers. In my opinion the 3S is still yet to be beat (of course it's pretty much a 2JZ with 2 less cylinders). And yes, one could argue that the 2JZ hasn't been beat if for no other reason than because they stopped building i6s.

ill have to look into that... I'm not looking into a huge amount of mods it's by far a show car this year but hopefully next year I'll be able to make it one

from what iv seen in the faq's and alot of viewed discusions i thought the 1j was more power out of the box but the 7m could easily match it whith some work even beat it in the long run. for a drift car i would think the 1j, seeing that cre says it has a better rev range( im no drifter at all but i would imagine higer revs would help any where but especialy in that sport) i have never driven the 3sgte celica or mr2 or have worked on it so..cre knows much more than i so ill take his word for it.

I've also seen a 1jz out of the 89-92 mk3 was a pretty straight forward swap

boosted88mkIII 04-23-2012 06:30 PM

yea I've heard the same things bout 1j's and I more for a higher faster rev I know I've read shimming the waste gate on a 7mgte can give u significantly more power but more mods needed to push more boost out of 7mgte than in a 1j

I was kidding, but Top Secret put a 720RWHP 3S-GTE into a MKIV a while back. Some guy got arrested for one in Australia... doing ~190MPH (not KPH) in one too. I think it was the same guy who got banned from England for doing the same thing in a RB26 equipped MKIV there. Or was it that the Australia effort was thwarted and the England one got arrested and banished? I dunno... both were 4cylinder monsters.

I REALLY don't understand the whole wanting to track a fatass Supra on anything but a drag strip though.
