can you add Trans fluid through top - W58?
Can you add trans fluid to the W58 through the shifter hole in the top. i've done it through the side hole before, but it was a PITA. it would be real easy to just dump it in through the hole before I put the shifter back in.
and something like 80 W 90 oil? right Last edited by carl johansson; 06-24-2012 at 01:51 AM. |

Sure you can. You should still remove the fill plug from the side before doing it though so as to avoid over filling.
Yes, 80W90 is the most common. My preference is MT90 by Redline.

much easier if you don't have a pump. can be messy if over filled.

You absolutely want to avoid over filling. If you can't get the fill plug out, want to be safe and don't mind the extra work this is a good solution: The fill plug is 1/2" to 1" below the lowest edge of the output shaft's oil seal. You can disconnect the drive shaft from the transmission, disconnect the transmission mounts and, using a jack, let the back of the transmission tip down until it's level with the fill plug's height.... Now just let is pour out of the extension housing for a little bit.
Not the easiest way to get the job done, but it works.

Thanks guys,
I will pull the plug and fill away, i believe it is 2.2 liters correct? Don't want to redrop the transmission, just finished putting it back in and mounting up the drive shaft, so lets hope the plug comes out. |

W58 = 2.5 US Qt. or 2.1 Imperial Qt. <---DRY FILL! Unless you're had this transmission apart it may retain a fair amount of the existing gear oil. Do not fill according to these specs, fill it to the level of the fill hole.

just wanted to know about where I was at. i just filled it till it started coming out the hole, then waited till it slowed to a trickle, in case it took time for it to work down, then plugged it up, should be good to go, thanks for all of the help. |

There will be some cavities which won't fill completely the first time. Nothing of any significant volume from what I recall. You could always check it after a couple drives.
