8 inch differential questions ( GX71 content )
How's it going, got a couple of questions for the turbo MK3 8 inch rear end guys.
I purchased a 85 GX71 mark II GT a couple of months ago, the GX71 comes with the 1g-gte twin turbo engine and the 8 inch LSD 2 way differential, to my knowledge my car is the only one in the states and finding parts for the 1g-gte is impossible so I'm concentrating on all the little things she has wrong like interiors and rear end. The rear end needs inner and outer boots on both sides and I know I'm gonna need some wheel bearings so I compared on toyodiy my differential and the turbo MK3 differential and its the same part number, now that I'm gonna buy differential parts should I get oem parts or aftermarket and what parts should I upgrade for better performance. My goals for the car is to swap a 2jzgte by next year and achieve 500hp so anything I can do to the rear end now to hold the 400 to 500 hp would help. Thanks, here pics of the car. Cool find. How did they manage to get that inspected and registered in the US?
Yeah, the 1G is often considered to be a bit of an odd dog and I can't say I've ever heard of anyone trying to build one for any performance... It would be better with a 3S-GTE in it's place, IMO. But at least they're more reliable than the 7M. Personally, I'll swap in a LSD from an A70 (NOT the TORSEN which was available as an option in Japan though!). Properly rebuilt and preloaded people have put down some killer power without issue. Beyond that you're looking at some custom work an a beefy domestic of your choice. The upside to the domestic option is the large selection of ratios available.
