mine does that too sometimes; some info would be beneficial. But seeing as how the tranny and clutch are over 20 yrs old, I'm not complaining about a little hard shifting.

More likely the selector fork's are wearing in the synchro although I don't think reverse is synchronised. So take a look at the selector forks.

Before you go pulling the big stuff apart check that the slave cylinder is moving far enough, the clutch master cylinder's reservoir is full, and that the fork isn't bent. Flushing the transmission fluid may also aid in the ease of shifting but the impact on shifting into reverse is seldom significant... worth a try though.

mine does the same, my way around it is to shift from neutral into 3rd and then reverse. actualy all of my toyotas that i have owned have the same issue whith reverse, eather they dont like going there directly or when they do they like to grind, i put some synthetic gera oil in the ol box and that helped quite a bit but not perfect( doesent help the tranny has 135k miles on it)
also what cre says is big too, i replaced my clutch cylinder, slave and i put in a stainless steel braided clutch line and PROPERLY adjusted the clutch free play and it made the problem more or less go away but it will occasionly eather wont go in easy or grind( new clutch and pressure plate too) i think its just a small over sight by toyota
