Power Steering Problem
Hi
I'm a newbie to posting threads at this site but I've been reading threads for a long time. I have a 1989 (build date) Supra, which I just got repaired for a blown head gasket. They machined the head and relaced the head gasket and I've had no problems with that. My problem is that I'm finding my steering has become a lot heavier than before I put it in for repair. I have asked the repairer if they have modified the power steering however they said they haven't touched it. I have checked the power steering fluid levels as well as have a basic look at the power steering lines to see if anything is leaking but all seems to be fine. Not sure where else to look and would be interested in any possible thoughts or soultions to my problem. Thanks in advance Regards, Bill P.S I have owned the car since brand new and this is the only major problem I have had with it apart from a few battery problems. |

Power Steering Problems
Hi! , I remember there is a wiring loom connected to the steering rack , has this been disconnected? - easily lost in the cluttered engine bay.

Is it difficult to turn the wheel regardless of RPM, or is it only difficult at idle? If only at idle/low RPM, check that the vacuum line running from the accordion hose (after the AFM) to the power steering pump is attached. I've found that tends to be overlooked during reassembly of the intake piping.

As the above say, there is a vac line & a wiring plug that could be the cause. I'd favour the wiring for the speed sensitive power steering being left off (I did this once just to see what difference it made & it made the low speed steering heavier) but it's worth checking both.

Hi all,
Apologies for taking so long to reply but thanks for the advice. I followed the trail of the wire and found it wasn't plugged in. When I plugged it in she worked a treat. Thanks for your help. Regards, Bill. |

Power Steering Problems
Hi Bill , The beauty of this forum are the variety of replies and possible cures for problems , very pleased that you found an answer and cured the power steering problem by reconnecting the loom . Question? did the repairers torque the head to the higher limit as recommended by this forum ? , retorqued mine ( 7MGTE ) to 75 ft lbs after 500 miles . Happy motoring .
